New Mexico Prep Basketball (Historical)

About the Author,  Chuck Ferris

Member of the Capitan State Championship football team in 1953, and 1954.  Played basketball on the "B" team.  Moved to Tularosa and was a member of the Football State Champion Wildcats in 1954.  Played basketball for Tularosa for two years, graduating in 1956.

Welcome New Mexico Prep Basketball Fans.  My name is Chuck Ferris, and I am what some folks call a “basketball nut.”   I grew up in Capitan, New Mexico, and moved to Tularosa for my last two years of high school.  Basketball has been a big part of my life since 1943, when the Capitan Tigers won the state tournament. Since “Tiger” games were almost the only thing to do during World War II, my four year old enthusiasm was quickly established. My first state tournament was in 1948, when it was played in Roswell.  I can remember well, watching the Wheatland Harvesters defeat the Albuquerque Bulldogs.  I continued to attend state tournaments and keep historical records.  State Tournaments became very important to me.  I have accumulated much “stuff” about New Mexico Prep Basketball, and some friends have suggested that I put it on the web.  The following pages are some of the “stuff” I have collected.

As a player, I was far from good.  In fact I spent most of my basketball time on the bench!  However, I always loved the game and played whenever I could.  In college, I played on intermural teams and later I was on several club or church league teams.  Always it was more for fun than success.  I even tried to referee, but the truth was that I was a worse ref than a player!

I am supportive of the New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) and for what it stands, however this site is intended to be totally independent from NMAA.  I do support the purpose of NMAA "Teaching Morals, Character and the American System of Achievement and Victory with Honor."

Most information is by year. Year means the year of the State Tournament, thus basketball for the school year 2009-2010 will be shown as 2010.  Start by clicking either NM Boys State Tournaments or NM Girls State Tournaments and then click the year.  Most information for that year will be indicated on that page.  You can always click home to get back here.

*  Although I have completed posting pictures of all championship teams (and a few others), I would be willing to accept better quality photos for any team.  For the years since 2001, I scanned the pictures from the program, and the quality is not too good.  I am definately looking for better.  In 2001, I used the photos submitted to NMAA and they came out great!  However I really like the team pictures that are in color!  If you have a picture, please click "Contact Chuck" and let me know.
