Undefeated teams in New Mexico Prep History
Trivia:
Mickey Miller played for the 1939 Albuquerque High Bulldogs in the state tournament. The Bulldogs played in the championship game that year. As coach of the Highland Hornets, Miller led his team to the state tournament 7 times, reaching the finals in 1960. In 1972, Miller was a state tournament official, however did not call a championship game. Mickey Miller is the only New Mexican to play in, coach in, and referee a state tournament.
In 2015, Tim Chacon became the second New Mexican to achieve the "Triple Crown." Tim played for the Penasco Panthers in the 1979, 1980, and 1981 State Tournaments, and was on the all-state team when his Panthers won state in 1981. In 1995, Tim coached the Panthers to state, though they lost in the quarter finals. This year (2015) Tim was a referee at the state tournament, giving him his final leg in the triple crown.
John and Jeff Hartog, of Gallup called the state tournament in 2012. They were the only father-son officials to call a state tournament together until 2015 when this was duplicated by Justin and Earl Greer.
In the longest game ever played in the state tournament, St. Pius defeated Santa Teresa 79-77 in four overtimes on March 9, 2011, in the Class AAAA Quarterfinals.
There have been five triple overtime games in state tournament history, but this is the only quadruple overtime game. (Total-48 minutes.)
